How porcelain tiles are made

Porcelain tiles are made with white clay, sand & feldspar, and fired at a higher temperature for a harder and denser finish to ceramic tiles.

Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are made of clay, making them both great options for a hardwearing floor or wall tile. The clay used to make porcelain tiles is, however, more refined and purified, and with the high temperatures and pressure it takes on in the kiln, the result is an extremely dense finish.

Porcelain tiles have a very low moisture absorption rate of 0.5% or less, meaning they're less likely to crack in extreme weather conditions or take on stains – perfect for both your interior and exterior.

How to clean porcelain tiles

First, consider if your porcelain tiles are polished, textured or bare, as different finishes may need different cleaning techniques.

When it comes to unglazed porcelain tiles, a sweep of the area followed by mopping with hot water and a multipurpose cleaner will have your tiles looking their best in no time at all.

For polished porcelain tiles, you can buy bespoke solutions or, in most cases, a multipurpose household cleaner will do the job. Alternatively, you can make your own mix of white vinegar and water for any smaller stains catching your eye.

Just be sure to sweep up thoroughly before mopping and to test a small patch with your cleaning solution before taking on the whole floor.

Where to use porcelain tile

With their less absorbent and hard wearing qualities, porcelain tiles are often found in areas where needed most. You’re likely to find them in high footfall areas such as hallways and kitchens, or in more moisture prone rooms like a bathroom or wet room.

Its versatile nature and durability makes porcelain a popular choice for both inside and out. In particular, using porcelain tiles outdoors is great for enduring all weathers. Rain or shine, it’s no problem – they can withstand freezing temperatures and damp without cracking or staining.

Choosing a porcelain tile design

Like ceramic, porcelain tiles come in a range of designs and patterns for you to choose from.

Polished porcelain tiles such as our British Ceramic Tile range Rock, work great in larger spaces offering a premium, glossy finish, whilst our matt versions provide a more modern and industrial feel.

Looking for a style statement? Our porcelain Hex tile range in black, white or grey are perfect for kitchen splashbacks and bathroom shower areas.

When it comes to tiling your floor with porcelain, be sure to consider using our wood effect porcelain tiles. They offer all the benefits of a hardwearing floor surface with the look of a traditional wood floor. Lay them in a classic brick pattern or an iconic parquet design.
